The Urban Fringe is a collective term for the green and sometimes wild spaces that exist in and around the city. This includes parks, allotments, community gardens, and untended land accessible to the public.  The spaces that fall within the scope of our activities are not necessarily confined to within the city limits, as long as long as they are accessible by public transport or low impact private transport.  The Urban Fringe Pharmacy project is about using these spaces to develop a deeper understanding of traditional and modern uses for wild growing medicinal and food plants.

‘We need most of all to renew that love and empathy for nature that we lost when we began our love affair with city life’
James Lovelock

A state of mind
Research has shown we are happier if we are near green spaces. Even a potted plant in the window can make a significant difference by connecting us to nature.

Herb Walks

We organise and facilitate guided walks for people of all ages within the urban fringe - usually at weekends or on a summer’s evening. If you would like this to happen in your area or on land you are looking after, get in touch!

Herb Workshops

In workshops we teach people how to appropriately harvest, dry and store herbs, and how to make various preparations such as tinctures and syrups, creams and lotions. We are also developing some more advanced workshops and a foundation course in herbal medicine.

The Bristol Herbal

A new project that aims to produce a practical guide to identifying medicinal plants that grow in the vicinity, drawing on traditional and modern sources, and giving clear guidelines on appropriate usage.
