The Urban Fringe Pharmacy is a herbal medicine project started in 2005 in Bristol by herbalist, Max Drake, and environmentalist, Jude English. Its main purpose is to help people understand about the practice of herbal medicine in a modern context, using locally growing wild and cultivated herbs.

In the spirit of transition awareness, it makes sense to grow medicinal plants locally, to build up community resilience in the face of near future changes in legislation and availability of resources. It makes equal sense to spread the knowledge and skills required to use native and local plants and medicinal preparations, empowering folk to take responsibility for their health and the health of the community.

Our principal activities are running workshops, training weekends, herb walks and talks. We are also engaged in growing herbs and sustainably producing medicines. In the Summer of 2009 we will be offering a 10-week course on the principles of herbal medicine, designed for people who want to learn how to use herbs practically and safely to treat common ailments.

Herb Walks

For details of herb walks in and around Bristol, bookmark this page, as they are often organised at short notice. If you want to organise a herb walk please get in touch.

Herb Workshops

In our basic workshops we teach people how to identify, harvest, dry and store herbs, and how to make various preparations such as tinctures and syrups, creams and lotions. We also offer more specialised workshops through the seasons.

The Bristol Herbal

A new project that aims to produce a practical guide to identifying medicinal plants that grow in the vicinity, drawing on traditional and modern sources, and giving clear guidelines on appropriate usage. We will also provide information on cultivation of useful herbs, and local resources.
