Previously we have worked with several different diet programmes, including the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Comprehensive Elimination Diet. Whilst many people have benefited from following this regime and others, a common criticism is that it is not well enough defined, and is mainly aimed at the American market. We have concluded that if you are going to put yourself through the rigours of doing an elimination diet, it is better to have strict instructions rather than ambiguous lists, and to include foods that are commonly available.
For the past 3 years we have been recommending the Burghwood Clinic’s 4 stage elimination diet. This has been designed by Dr John Mansfield, a founder member and former president of the British Society for Allergy and Environmental Medicine. The programme has been tried and tested over 35 years, with thousands of people having their lives transformed by sticking rigidly to the instructions, and finding out what was causing their symptoms. There are two versions: one for omnivores and one for vegetarians and vegans.
If you are thinking of doing the diet, plan it well in advance first, and psyche yourself up. It’s tough, and its only worth doing if you strictly obey the rules. If you are in the Bristol area we run an action research group at least once a year to support the process. For further information please email us.
